Finding the perfect dog house for my furry friend

Here in my part of the world summer is coming to a close but that means that we still have some of our hottest days to look forward to. I have been thinking about getting my dog a dog house and want to find one that will be both cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Fortunately, I  don’t have to worry too much about rain but it would be best to find one that sits off the ground to keep my dog warm and dry.

I have typical size dog so I think a midsize dog house would be best. I always think about my first dog house, it was wood and the roof lifted off in one piece so it could be cleaned out. It was fine for the fall but hot in the summer. My dog always seemed to prefer to dig a hole under the dog house and sleep there during the summer! These days there are all sorts of dog houses made in a variety of materials and I wonder which kind would be the coolest? I have seen some made from thick plastic and others made from wood with insulation, or even some made from wood but with slats or windows for ventilation. There is even a small air conditioner you can buy and attach to dog houses to really keep your dog cool!

I think that because of the location I plan to put the dog house, it is already shady and cool enough under the eaves of the house that I can do without an insulated dog house and probably just get a standard wood or plastic dog house. Hopefully my dog will like his new house and will not continue to try to sleep in my flowerbeds!
